Surgery for Wyatt

Wyatt had a successful surgery on Thursday getting ear tubes placed and adenoids taken out. He was the best patient. We spent the morning hanging out in my office playing with Legos. We had Lego pizza for breakfast since Wyatt had to be NPO for the surgery. Once things were ready we came back to the holding area where Wyatt did such a great job waiting. We tested the waters to see how well he would do going back to the operating room without Mommy or Daddy. Miss Betsy, one of my co-workers, took him down the hall to find a car to drive. Wyatt did great. He found a cute little convertible and drove cautiously around the hallways with Daddy for a little bit.

Here's Wyatt driving the hallways. He was so cautious as he drove around only briefly looking at me so I could get a picture. Too cute!

We spent the night before surgery preparing Wyatt for what to expect. We told Wyatt we would be getting his ears fixed. We practiced breathing through the mask that would be used to get him off to sleep initially. He said he was "blowing up balloons" every time he blew in the mask. He was quite prepared.

Here is Wyatt "blowing up balloons" or practing with the mask.

We had to wait for another kiddo to go back to surgery before heading back, so Wyatt killed some time contently watching movies on top of Daddy's head.

This was quite the setup, Wyatt perched on top of Daddy's shoulders with a DVD strapped to Daddy's head. Does it get any better than this!
When it came time to go back, Wyatt got a little nervous not wanting to drive the car he had picked out. However, Dr. Kilkelly and her team were great in getting him distracted enough to head back. I picked a fabulous team to take care of my sweet baby. Dr. Goudy was our surgeon, Dr. Kilkelly our anesthesiologist. Our holding room nurse, recovery room nurse, and CRNAs were fabulous too! Can't get much better than VCH staff! Knowing and trusting the people I picked to care for Wyatt made it so much easier to hand him over. So, that's just what happened. I put my trust in the Lord to carry our sweet Wyatt through this with the best people caring for him. Things could not have gone any better. Dr. Kilkelly said once Wyatt was back in the operating room he did great. She sat with him on the bed, giving him a hug as he "blew up the balloon" and drifted off to sleep. The surgery was quite quick and before I knew it Dr. Goudy was back out telling us Wyatt did great!

Once back in recovery, Wyatt was a little crabby, as to be expected. After getting him comfortable in my lap, watching a movie, sucking on a Popsicle and taking a little pain med, he settled down. After two doses of morphine, some reglan, 3 cherry Popsicles and a whole cup of juice, Wyatt perked up and was asking to go home cherry red lips and all. It was a smooth recovery.

Wyatt napped on & off the rest of Thursday with the help of some pain meds. By yesterday, he was back to his playful self with just a little Tylenol as needed.

Here is Wyatt napping and recovering. What an angel!

Yippee for answered prayers! Everything went really well and we just want to say we are so thankful for all the wonderful nurses and doctors who took such excellent care of our precious boy! The Lord blessed us with a wonderful team to care for Wyatt and an excellent outcome. Hopefully these little ears of Wyatt will be infection free and his hearing won't be affected.
